World Mental Health Day

Today is World Mental Health Day, raising fundamental awareness of mental health issues and the stigma that still surrounds mental health disorders.

It is estimated that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental health disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. It is sadly on the rise among children and young adults, and in 2017 the highest suicide rate in the UK was for men under the age of 50.

If you have any concerns that someone may be suffering from some form of mental health disorder, please keep talking to them, communication is the key. Likewise, if you feel that you have some form of mental health disorder, please do speak out. Talking is key, if you don’t feel able to talk to friends and family, many professional organisations are on hand to help, as well as your local GP/mental health team. Please don’t suffer in silence, and never be afraid to talk.

The mental health charity Mind has some interesting statistics which show that mental health disorders are more common than you would think…
