Stay Active Stay Well Event

Held on Wednesday 29th May 2019, the Stay Active Stay Well Event took place at Five Rivers Leisure Centre in Salisbury.

The event was held for people with learning disabilities, their families and care providers, and offered a vast array of activities, including adapted cycling, inclusive sport, seated exercise, boccia and gardening and the opportunity to meet with people who were involved with promoting physical activity and health in Wiltshire.

The day focussed on all forms of physical activity for fun, health and wellbeing. Healthcare professionals from the local NHS, Wiltshire Council and partner organisations were there to showcase opportunities to be physically active.

At Abi live-in, we always ensure that our clients are able to participate in social events as much as possible, which is why we attended the event with two of our live-in clients in Andover, David and Ciara Stow, who thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the event. Ciara said that she would like to be part of organising the next one as it would be an excellent opportunity to involve the local LD schools.

David and Ciera both suffer from cerebral palsy but they have been happily married for two years and enjoy socialising as much as they can. David is a Southampton FC fan and holds a season ticket and attends one game a month. He is also a keen boccia player and would like to join the boccia club in Devizes.

Ciera communicates through her iPad and is starting college in September to study Social Science.

With the help of Tracy Mayo, their live-in carer, they go out every weekend to either go shopping or to have dinner. Tracy once accompanied David and Ciara on an overnight trip to London, where they visited the Tate Modern.

"I have been David and Ciera's live-in carer since December 2018. I love my job, and with Abi live-in I get daily breaks and it's my choice as to when I take them. I never feel lonely because I see other carers on a daily basis when they come to relieve me. I find my job incredibly rewarding and flexible, and I love living with the Stow's. They are so much fun to be around and have a real curiosity for life." Tracy Mayo
