One of our live-in clients retraces part of his family history!

A few weeks ago, John Pendrill one of our live-in clients and his carer Antonio had a lovely visit to Heale House and Gardens, which John has a very special connection to thanks to his interesting family tree, that dates back to King Charles II.
King Charles I was executed by the British government in 1649- Following his execution, his eldest son, King Charles II, attempted to regain the throne. However, his hopes were crushed at Worcester, in the final conflict of the Civil War.
This resulted in King Charles II having to flee for his life. He sought refuge at Boscobel and was taken in by John’s family, who hid him under floorboards at Boscobel House- The house was searched while he remained hidden.
From there he had to dress and act like a peasant so that he did not draw attention to himself. He had to make his way to the coast in order to get a boat across to France.

Throughout his journey he was hidden in many places- He eventually arrived at Heale House where he was hidden for a slightly longer period of time. Here he had a little more freedom in the house whilst the boat was being readied in the port.
Because of John's family history, he likes to visit places that King Charles II had visited or stayed at.

John’s visits have included going to Wilton House, where King Charles II had banqueted with over 400 other Royal guests. John has also had lunch at The George Inn in Mere. On returning to England, King Charles II visited Mere and ate at this Inn. John's home is named Boscobel Cottage and he has asked to be taken to Boscobel House later this year.

At Abilive-in, we are proud to be able to enhance John's life by taking him out and about and allowing him to enjoy his life, participating in things that he loves doing.
